Snapshot Saturday: Bluer Than Blue

Road closed? With this view, I'd be more than happy to do a detour any day!

It's bluer than blue, and we're not sadder than sad to backtrack about 150 miles... because this gorgeous view unfolded before us whilst cruising along the Pacific Coast. How did we get here? We were on Highway 1 to San Francisco from Los Angeles and found out that part of it was closed when we passed Cambria. Our turning point, Ragged Point Inn in San Simeon, has a backdrop that will make you step on the brakes!

California Dreamin'

... disrupted by a baby wailing in an infant safety seat. It was almost six in the evening, and yet the sun's still high and mighty. I squinted as my eyes swept the beach and craned my neck out the car's window for Santa Monica Beach has a very, very long stretch.

Last hurrah for spring.

My 8-monther Luna continued to inordinately whinge (it was her first time to be strapped in such seat) as my friend Nadgeda parked the car. I froze when I stepped out. Judging by the way other beach goers wrapped themselves, I concluded that I wasn't just the one with the chill.

It was our second day in America. Fresh from sunny Philippines, I initially thought I was the only person suffering from May Gray's frigorific bite when I caught sight of teens in hot pants and skimpy rompers. They're probably cold too but would rather be the first to don this year's summer fashion forecast by top designers than be in a comfy seat suit.

I took Luna out of the car. She wasn't shivering like me but I enveloped her in my pashmina shawl anyways. We strode towards the bridge to Santa Monica Pier while Nadgeda, a Haitian-born-Florida-raised Los Angeles resident, pointed out and discussed parts of the bay.

Wonderful Wednesday walk.

A big Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. resto perched off the bridge's wooden planks revealed itself as we got closer to the pier. Nadgeda shared that it's a restaurant with a Forrest Gump theme (original one's in Monterey, California). She was taken aback when I told her that our country has a branch, among the not so many worldwide.

We moved inwards the pier, past the souvenir shops and street performers. It wasn't so crowded that Wednesday. There were only a handful of customers dining al fresco, with food grabbed from the kiosks dotted around the area. A number of which were enjoying a cup of brew from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, also a California-based cafe chain.

There were even less people on the rides of admission-free Pacific Park. I would have tried some had Luna agreed to be held by someone else. Nadgeda could only carry her for less than five seconds, after which Luna throws a deranged tantrum. And so all we could do was to keep strolling.

First and only solar-powered ferris wheel in the world.

John Mayer's song Clarity played in my head as I retraced his footsteps in the music video. ♪"... And I will wait to find, if this will last forever."♪ I stood close to the edge by the rail and momentarily watched a couple of anglers waiting for a tug. I wondered what kind of fish they hope to catch.

I struggled taking photos with my right hand and carrying an infant on the left (not to mention the heavyweight tote bag full of baby stuff dangling on my shoulder!) while battling the nipping breeze. Santa Monica Beach may not be a tropical paradise but picturesque nonetheless. Reason why Hannah Montana, the new 90210 and other television series were/are being shot here.

Anyhoo, I eventually gave up on trying to get decent snapshots and stomped to a souvenir stand for retail therapy. Nadgeda spoke to the Mexican guy who manned it. "You're not flying kites today", voicing out her observation. "Not too windy", he replied. I browsed his merchandise from kites to fridge magnets to postcards. He's also selling small toy VW Kombi vans with a surfboard on the roof with Sta. Monica Bay, CA 2011 handwritten on it. He said new stock just arrived with other colors aside form the blue and green on display. I asked for a yellow one because I assumed it would look cute beside the yellow tuktuk model I bought from India for Luna.

Left: Retracing John Mayer's footsteps in his song Clarity's music video. I'm obviusly a fan. Right: Mexican guy's souvenir stand.

The toy cars are shipped from Brazil, but yeah, made in China like everything else. He asked me if I'd still purchase it even though it doesn't have the Sta. Monica Bay, CA 2011 label on it. I raised my brows in inquiry and he explained, "We just write it ourselves". I told him I could wait while they write on the toy but then he said the guy who does it already left and that he can't do it himself because he's got "ugly writing".

I bought it anyway and thought I might as well write it myself. Heck, I could even label it Hawaii 2011 or Brazil 2011. As we were about to leave, he asked where we're from. When I answered I'm from the Philippines his lips broke into a huge grin and blurted, "I love pancit and adobo!". He also eats at Goldilocks. It's amusing to know so, for Mexican dishes are distinctly different from Pinoy fare.

We bid him a jolly goodbye and made our way back to the parking lot for Luna was crying uncontrollably. I fussed and thought she might be finally freezing too. In the car, I strapped her in and gave her milk bottle. I soon found out she's dozy for she slumbered within ten minutes into the ride. It was a peaceful drive to the hotel during rush hour traffic. I resumed my California dreamin'...

Accidentally America

Obviously not keen on acquiring this visa. Photo taken at home. Just woke up, without changing clothes, without fixing my hair.

It was one heck of a surprise. A free trip to a country that's nonexistent on the bottom most part of our travel bucket list. And it's all because of a lavish French boss.

About a couple of months back, the hubby was asked by his boss to meet their client in California. Surprisingly he offered me to tag along. Since we ain't spending a penny for this trip, I said yes without further questions. But that meant canceling our China visit (we didn't have enough time to apply for a visa because my passport was held by the U.S. embassy for a week), which I still am sappy-angry about.

So why aren't we that giddy to go to the Land of Milk and Honey? Well, the hubby's been there. Worked there for fifteen months actually. As for me, let's just say I (make that we Filipinos) feel very much familiar with their culture because of our highly Americanized education, Hollywood movies, TV shows, American fastfood, balikbayan relatives, and phone conversations/arguments with clients in a call center (a previous job).

I love exploring unfamiliar territories and being culture shocked. I assume it ain't gonna happen in the U.S. But hey, that's just an assumption (an ignorant one I must say) and what I am excited about is to prove myself wrong about this.

Then probably I'd be annoyed we're staying for ten days only. Now Googling national parks.

The GeThaiway

“There is no way you can keep it out of Lonely Planet, and once that happens it's countdown to dooms day.”, Alex Garland wrote on his novel The Beach.

This novel turned Hollywood movie’s setting is in sunny Thailand, and was shot on the island of Koh Phi Phi Lei. Well, it ain’t just Lonely Planet that put this piece of paradise on the backpacker map. The flick did too. But hey, I reckon this is inevitable, because news about a perfect tropical getaway can never be hushed for long.

Tourist influx brought about more travel agencies offering better tour options and more good deals on flights to Thailand from different parts of the globe, making the country easily accessible any time of the year. The downside? It also resulted to more touts, crazier parties (could be a pro for some) and arguably, harm in the environment. Regardless of the cons, visitors will keep pouring in fo sho. I myself will definitely be back.

It has been two years since I sauntered along some of the country’s outstanding powdery white beaches... I share with you today my top three beach geThaiways!

1. Koh Phi Phi Lei

Maya Beach is famous for it was where The Beach was filmed. We didn't set foot there though because of the admission fee. Instead, we asked our boatman to dock on this small cove just across it. Equally beautiful and isolated!

2. Lamai Beach, Koh Samui

I prefer laid back Lamai Beach over pumping, and more popular Chaweng. We stayed an extra day on Koh Samui just to sleep in one of these cozy beach front huts.

3. Freedom Beach, Koh Tao

It's so worth the bumpy motorbike ride from the island's town center. Aptly named too, for I and a bunch of Couchsurfers celebrated our temporal freedom from worldly worries by frolicking like kids in the sand.

Now I yearn to rollover these shores in this sweltering summer heat, and gulping an ice cold Beer Chang. What's your favorite geThaiway?

Snapshot Saturday: Javanese Jump Shot

Prambanan Temple Complex in Java, Indonesia. Gleefully watched a bunch of locals take heaps of jump shots as I sat on the grass. Clearly, Pinoys aren't the only ones who love doing this.

Eurotel Event: Baguio Bliss 2011 Part 2

... and I almost forgot about this! Remember two months ago when I was raving about a blissful Baguio weekend care of Eurotel? I ended my post promising to write about our karaoke session which the hotel management arranged for us. Obviously, I haven't written about it yet nor about the tour they organized for us the day after. Now's the time I do so, while I dreamily browse through hundreds of photos taken in Baguio way back when we resided there.

So what happened evening of day one?

Me workin' the mic. My first song, "My Humps". Thanks to Jen of Marriage and Beyond for this paparazzi shot. Is that Melo's hand gesturing one more song or was he dancing?

Karaoke madness (we're true-blue Pinoys!) backed up by bottles of beer and wine. But before I spill the beans, here's what we did when we were all still sane.

We were lead by Eurotel's marketing to the hotel's function halls. They divided one big hall which takes up the entire floor into different segments. We were showed three different types of set up for conferences and one set up for banquets.

Conference set up.

Banquet set up for wedding receptions and birthday parties.

Our dinner was served at the banquet hall. Pinikpikan was one of the dishes! Eurotel Baguio's the only branch that has it on their resto menu, for an obvious reason.

Right after we finished our meals, the clubbin' lights were turned on. The makeshift bar was filled with beer and wine and the buffet table was replenished with hors d'oeuvres. The song list was finally snatched by everyone passed around. No one escaped the mighty microphone (Iris of Pinay Ads was the only one who tried to pass anyway).

Claire of Lakwatsera De Primera and Joseph Raymundo strutting their stuff for laughs.

In between songs Joseph Raymundo, Eurotel's marketing staff, dropped punchlines like a pro stand up comedian. We did icebreakers, plus a singing challenge wherein Melo of Out Of Town and I won flash drives. We called it a night a little past 12.

I awoke the next day with a slight hangover, though I only had a few bottles of booze. Good thing I have recuperated when we were taken to some of Baguio's top tourist destinations. We went to the Chinese Temple, Tam-Awan Village, and strawberry farm in La Trinidad.

Eurotel's marketing team also invited the hubby and Luna to join the city tour!

It was such an action-packed day and our hosts made sure we were well fed. We had buffet brekkie at Eurotel, lunch at Oh My Gulay and dinner at Barrio Fiesta. In the evening we went to D' Kamalig comedy bar and around midnight... we were treated to a free massage at Spa De Soleil!

Spa De Soleil, my fave part of the event!

And as if what I've mentioned ain't enough... They gave us a package of Baguio goodies before we all left the hotel on the third day.

Goody bags' got ube jam and strawberry wine among others.

Now ain't that fantastic? Did I not tell you guys it was a bliss-ful weekend?!
