6 Fun Things You Can Do at Resorts World Sentosa

Off the southern coast of Singapore lies the 49-hectare Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). This integrated resort is home to a variety of dining and entertainment hubs – a visit to which is guaranteed to make even the briefest of stays in the port city-state worthwhile.

Beyond trying your luck at its world-class casino, here are other fun activities you can do while in RWS.

1. Spend a night in one of its stylish hotels

RWS has a stable of six hotels, each catering to a particular type of guest. For high rollers, there’s Hotel Michael, or the Crockfords Tower – an 11-storey all-suite hotel beneath which is the resort’s casino. For vacationers tagging their kids along, there’s the Festive Hotel next door. At the west end of the compound, there’s Equarius Hotel, along with the 22 Beach Villas, perfect for those who prefer a more quiet space.

Then there’s the Hard Rock Hotel for rock n’ roll and music fans. Festooned with pop culture memorabilia, the hotel is nostalgic and laidback. It also enjoys a strategic location, making every other attraction in the resorts just a short walk away.

2. Beat the heat with some waterfun

Singapore weather can get a little too humid but there’s a way to combat it at RWS. Head over to the Adventure Cove Waterpark and have some fun under the sun. You can chill at the wave pool, lounge across the lazy river, or go on one of the many waterslides.

If you’re into thrilling rides, make sure to go on the Riptide Rocket – Asia’s first hydro-magnetic coaster. It’s basically what happens when a roller-coaster and a waterslide decide to have a kid. It’s heart-thumping, that’s for sure, and can even make the most jaded vacationers (read: me) scream out of excitement.

3. Make Like Marco Polo

After a wet and wild time at Adventure Cove, you can have another kind of waterfun over at the Maritime Experiential Museum. Opened in 2011, the museum offers an insightful and unique glimpse into the Silk Route. Guided by holographic iterations of four famous adventurers – Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Zheng He, and Sang Nila Utama – guests will be taken through the fascinating world of maritime exploration – from tying knots, identifying vessels, to learning about how trading ports operate.

The museum also houses the actual Jewel of Muscat – a dhow constructed based on the design of the Belitung shipwreck – which went on a six-month weather-rampaged voyage from Oman to Singapore. On top of this, there is also the Typhoon Theater, a 4D show that allows guests to experience what it’s like to sail during a storm.

4. Eat like a local

If authentic local flavors are your thing, head over to the Malaysian Food Street where you can sample traditional Malay dishes for a reasonable price. Feast on laksa, curry, catfish, and roti canai paired with the refreshing rosy bandung and your ails from a day of frolicking are sure to fade away. Oh, before you go back out to the Singaporean sun, make sure to cool down with either a cendol or an ais kacang.

5. Live out your movie fantasies

Perhaps one place you shouldn’t miss when in RWS is Universal Studios (USS). If you have to go to just one place in Sentosa, make it this park. A visit here is like walking into the world of your favorite movie. It’s hard not to geek out at the life-size statue of Bumbleebee. You can’t help but swoon at the magnificent castle at Far, Far Away Land. There are many photo opportunities for sure, but don’t forget to actually experience the rides. The Mummy, and the Battlestar Galactica Human vs. Cylon are highly recommended. If you’re a sucker for adrenaline-pumping rides, you’re going to love these.

You’re also sure to enjoy the live musical acts, plus the appearances of beloved characters like the Minions and Puss in Boots. For March to April, the park becomes a Trolltopia, a nod to the popular animated film Trolls. Live performances featuring the characters Poppy and Branch are held. Activities like a pair of virtual reality games, and a “Trollify” booth – where one can transform into a happy Troll with face paint and a bright, crazy wig – have also been installed. If you’re a fan of this film, better book your tickets asap since this show will only be running for two months. Come May, USS will switch it up again to welcome summer.

6. Partake in a culinary experience

RWS has several distinguished restaurants in its folds. There’s the 2 Michelin-star L’ Atelier de Joël Robuchon with its avant-garde French fanfare. There’s also Forest, helmed by celebrity chef Sam Leong, and its menu of contemporary Chinese cuisine. But, perhaps, the most noteworthy of all is Tangerine.

Boasting a set menu that “rediscovers old recipes”, Tangerine is a delightful dining encounter that reintroduces one’s palate to traditional flavors. Crops such as daikon and taro take center stage along with locally-sourced seafood like barramundi. Head chef Aisha Ibrahim explains the restaurant’s philosophy as “celebrating the humble”. And with homegrown ingredients, its own herb garden, and a menu that changes based on what’s available, a visit to Tangerine is a great way to cap off the day.

So there you have it. Whether you’re young or old or a kid-at-heart, you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy at Resorts World Sentosa!
