Yup, you need not book a tour. But if you intend to go to Tibet (and to another province I forgot which), you have to belong to a tour group to obtain a permit to enter. Hassle.

Very interesting article! I always thought that one could not go around Beijing without booking a tour package. I guess a brave (or reckless) mindset and a copy of Insight Guide's Step by Step edition of the Chinese capital will suffice. I hope :) Love your posts. Gin and I also have separation anxieties when it comes to parting with a lot of bucks during our travels hehe.
