That Three-Month North-Central America Trip: Hotels And Hostels

From (the mythical) 1,000 thread count sheets, to threadbare linen. From fancy wardrobes to floordrobes. From luxurious bathroom toiletries to cheap shampoo in sachets. From fantastic brekkie buffets to no brekkie at all.

During our three-month, north to central America trip, we saw polar opposites of the tourism spectrum through the motley bunch of accommodations we bunked in. I personally like to mix things up. But for the hubby, if good WiFi wasn’t an issue, he’d rather do chintzy all the way.

You could imagine how glad I was it was an issue for him.

To describe a few of the places we slept in:

A wooden cabin in a remote Californian town with a population of about 200.

The oldest hotel in Arizona.

A dingy hotel-slash-casino we randomly booked after being offloaded from our flight to Mexico.

A hostel room in Flores, Guatemala with a balcony that overlooks Lake Petén Itzá.

An AirBnb rental in El Salvador with granny hosts aged 70+ and 80+ who drink beer as much as I do.

A boutique two-storey hotel built almost entirely on top of the water in Utila, Honduras.

A self-contained unit on a hilltop in Roatan, Honduras. Some minutes trek from Half Moon bay beach.

Individual reviews will be on their way, once I’m off this brief blog break (Because current sitch: On vacation from traveling!). So for now, here’s ze wrap-up in photos. Hopefully soon in words.

When not backpacking, she teaches her daughter sight words and belly dancing (even if she's not good at it). She's currently eating her way around some hippie town in Australia. She loves talking about herself in the third person.

  1. Wow – what a journey it must have been! (suddenly I hear Lea Salonga singing in the background, LOL) Seriously – I’m looking forward to reading more about your adventures. This is inspiring me to do a collage of all those bedroom and accommodation shots I’ve taken (bathrooms and toilets included) and rarely post.
Pag nagawi ka sa Atlanta, let me know – may bahay-bakasyunan ka dito 🙂
